Sadie Terracotta Head sculpture
I didn’t originally make this but Sadie my daughter brought it home as a leather-hard portrait of her done by another student.
However it was completely solid clay and I had to split it in 2, and hollow it out for firing. i put 2 halves back together again and did have to "tidy it up", I think it sort of looks like her, and am quite attached to it .
However the story doesn’t end there; I still had a large wodge of clay left from the hollowing out, so made the femail figure below.

Female torso in Terracota
So this is the female form created from the insides of Sadie’s Head.
I created it as one would make a coil pot, building it up from a figure of 8 base layer or 2 at the top of the thigh, then widening it outwards and upwards to full width of hips. Then heavily tapering in and upwards towards the waist.
By this time I was getting concerned that I may run out of my batch of clay, and my basic idea was to use it all up EXACTLY, and not have any left.( I had no reserves). I guess I thought any spare could be used on the neck. Anyway by the time I'd risen above the breasts, I was starting to feel very good about it.
At this time, I was doing a pottery class with a good artist friend, the late "Brian Lamberth" in Hampton, where he had a pottery workshop. Luckily we got on well and he let me do my own thing there , so long as I paid my way. So both the head (above) and this were fired about the same time, under his excellent supervision.
They have sat on my piano ever since, though I had given her to an old neighbour, who looked after her for a few years, but when he moved house, he insisted I take it back, which I happily did.
It is not for sale at the moment, but I may reconsider at a later date.
